Pet First Aid Certification
Course
This
certification course is now offered in two formats face to
face at Treetops or through E-Training For Dogs. The face to
face course at Treetops runs 12 hours and is split over a Friday
evening and Saturday. The e-training for dogs course involves
9 hours of live online classroom instruction offered as six
90 minute segments over a three week period. The course in
both formats is designed to give the pet lover the necessary
information and skills to stabilize an injured animal until
qualified veterinarian care is accessed. Emphasis is placed
on the prevention of illness and injury, the importance of
early veterinary care and the appropriate restraining of an
injured animal. There is significant hands-on training and
the course covers a wide variety of topics including poisoning,
medical conditions, CPR, AR, choking, wounds, bleeding, shock,
bandaging, first aid kit contents and herbal remedies. The
textbook utilized throughout the course is: The First Aid Companion
for Dogs and Cats by Amy D. Shojai published by Rodale in their
Prevention for Pets series. The textbook will be augmented
with the provision to each student of a DVD demonstrating a

Herbal and Aromatherapy
Workshop
Participants
will learn about the qualities of herbs – what they look,
smell and taste like; what parts of the plant have healing
properties; contraindications and precautions when using herbal
remedies; the most beneficial form of each herbal remedy including
learning how to prepare dried herbs, powders, teas, infusions
and compresses. Students will learn how to use herbal remedies
to provide solutions for common ailments – behavioural
issues such as anxiety, nervousness and fear; digestive upset
including nausea, flatulence, constipation, impacted anal glands
and diarrhea; parasite problems; lesions of the skin. Participants
will also learn how to use herbal remedies to help elderly
animals cope with the infirmities of old age such as arthritis,
cataracts, dental issues, heart disease, kidney disease and
incontinence. Participants will also learn about the qualities
of aromatherapy oils, blending of aromatherapy oils, what are
carrier oils and how to use them, contraindications and precautions
with the use of aromatherapy. 2009 session dates are now available.

Canine Massage Certification
Program
This comprehensive certification
program in canine massage is offered in two formats. A student
directed and student paced home study course or a live, interactive,
online format. Students will begin this course with an overview
of canine anatomy, physiology and patho physiology which will
aid in their understanding of the relationship between anatomy,
physiology, biomechanics, kinesiology and massage therapy in
animals.
Students
will then move onto learning all the relevant Swedish massage
therapy strokes; history and theory of massage; definition and
purpose of massage for canines; creating a positive working environment
for massage; physiological effects of massage for canines; psychological
effects of massage for canines; contraindications to massage
for canines; assessment and treatment protocols for canines;
an introduction to hydrotherapy for canines; canine biomechanics
and kinesiology; case studies of common canine soft tissue issues.
The course will cover specialized massage techniques including
acupressure, lymph drainage massage, reflexology and sports massage.
Throughout the course we observe and respond to canine behaviour.
There is also discussion and practice of positive canine handling
skills. Additionally the course covers business and client management,
professionalism and ethics. The entire home study course involves
21 student directed learning units, 40 full body canine massage
practice sessions, and finally the completion of a written and
practical certification exam. For those involved in the live
interactive online course the program is broken into three separate
courses (introduction to canine anatomy and physiology, introduction
to canine massage and advanced canine massage) that represent
thirty-four 90 minute online classes over a 22 week period. Students
will be required to complete homework assignments that will involve
the submission of pictures and the completion of video demonstrations.

difference in the curriculum between the two formats simply a
